Note: Census data before the 1900s was usually hand-written, making it difficult for us today to accurately read original or photocopied documents. Consequently, data from multiple sources may sometimes appear to differ. Also, people sometimes changed the spelling of their last names, further complicating accurate tracing of ancestry.

Dedham (also sometimes seen written as Delham, Dyham and Byham) is a village in Essex County, near the River Stour.

NOTE: The last name Sherman was derived from Shearman or even Shereman. A "shearer" shears the sheep, but then a "shearman" makes the sheared wool into cloth. Shearmen were also known as clothiers or woolen manufacturers. Such change in last name from Shearman to Sherman increases the difficulty of accurately tracing lineages.

NOTE: John had two brothers: Joseph and William. William's son Roger Sherman of Connecticut, John's nephew, was one of the signers of the US Declaration of Independence. Roger was also the only man to sign all four founding documents of the US: Articles of Association (1774), Declaration of Independence (1776), Articles of Confederation (1777), and US Constitution (1787).
